My work draws inspiration from the great photographers of the Farm Security Administration photographic unit, Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, and profound influence from the Americans by Robert Frank. I like my photographs to give a feeling of looking at a hidden world we do not normally see. My current work is in relation to my childhood and has grown from my life experiences.
My work has centred around the experience of being in the country. There is no particular aspect of the country that I have concentrated on. The people and the landscape are equally of interest to me. Seeing and being aware of my surroundings is the underlying focus of my photographs. I find farming, particularly interesting and associate most of my work around this environment, I have explored farming traces.
The decision to shoot in colour was made to remind the viewer that the people and places depicted are not examples from history books of what was, but living examples of what is and what can be. I take the pictures for myself, to identify with hidden qualities of my character to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me.
