Laney Gaffney

Observation has become a fundamental part of our society. We have developed a constant need for watching others or a need to be watched ourselves. To a large extent photography is a voyeuristic medium, it creates work that encourages observation of others and in many cases the subject being photographed is seemingly unaware they are being monitored adding to the voyeuristic act.

My work was created in an exploration of the private life being documented. To watch others perform day-to-day activities in their private spaces through an obsessed eye. Some of the images may become repetitive but it is in the use of repetition that we see obsession of an individual or their activity.

My work is displayed in style to create the façade of a stalker. To help portray an unhealthy preoccupation with the subject of the images.
