David Holbrook

Within this project I hoped to create a fictional piece based around ideas of human curiosity, suspicion, delusion and those sweet moments of contemplation. My inspiration came from artists, such as Hannah Starkey, Philip Lorca diCorcia, Gregory Crewdson and Jeff Wall.

In my work I wanted to create a narrative piece, which has no distinct beginning middle or end, a work, which can be read from multiple angles depending on each individuals perception.

“When I am entranced by something, I tend to forget everything else. I lose track of where I am, what I’m doing there, and how much time I have before my next appointment. If there are people waiting in line behind me, I forget them. For a while I am harmlessly hypnotized, and the world falls away, leaving me in a silent, empty place.”
James Elkins – the Object Stares Back, on the nature of seeing

I have a strong interest in philosophy and love to work with people. Human interaction and observation is my fuel. These ideas helped me to create the images within my final piece. Trying to utilize elements of different times, situations, emotions and state of mind. Clothing, choice of model location and composition play the most crucial role here, I have reached a new way of working which I am comfortable in and also offers me a challenging and stimulating environment.
