Within all things there exists a pattern or trend; be it knowledgeable, inexplicable, or contradictory and complex. One may attempt to define it, shape and mould it into something fashionable, but ultimately there is no way of controlling such a thing. Merely recognition of the complexity of beauty around us; all art essentially exists as a means of trying to understand such things. This is Phenomenology.
My photography has always been focused on the natural progression of time and the evolution of events which occur, or could occur within the images; be they abstract or otherwise. Much of this development led to a stage whereby one finds it imperative to question accepted beliefs. By taking from the writings of Merleau-Ponty, Husserl, and Nietzsche, one finds it important to acknowledge the variation of viewpoints and ideas. This is perception.
Cynics are uninterested, or dismissive of what it really is. But an acknowledgment of ‘its’ existence means something. There is no such thing as nothing. Of course these are just images- made up stories of no real meaning or significance, but surely all things are just images. The only meaning or importance held by certain objects is that which we impose on them. Choice is the only true form of freedom.
And then there is the brutal honesty at the bottom of all things- The complex simplicity of the night sky; which appears as mere pattern or darkness, yet contains all manner of infinite possibility. This is your freedom of choice. Not ignoring the depth and often destructive actions occurring within, but being able to interpret and accept the balance and chaos of all things. And to put that into an image. And Everything belongs in the Forest, and All things are returned to the Shore. An exploration of space and distance recognises the connection between all, be it for better or worse.
And all things move in colours and waves.
