Heather Shand

As a society we have a habit of turning our back on things we don’t want to deal with. Sometimes the things we hide away from people are the most interesting parts of us. It is so easy to walk away from something that is not aesthetically pleasing, but beauty is only skin deep.

In a previous project I looked at social and industrial decay. I found it peculiar that when we are not entirely satisfied with our surroundings we don’t fix any of the problems, we just get new ones and leave the old behind for some one else to deal with. While I was documenting this I began to realise just how interesting these places really are. You can easily find beauty in the most unlikely places.

My intentions were to challenge my audience with the places that have been discarded, I want to show people what we have left behind.
