Hadrian’s Wall is not just a local landmark but an awesome relic of British history. The vast expanse spreads across the breadth of England as it allows the visitor a chance to step back through the ages. I have always been fascinated by its history and wanted non-locals to see the wall through my eyes. I hope my perspective of this monument to Roman engineering history will inspire visitors to view the wall in all its fading glory.

The wall runs from the Solway Firth in the west to Wallsend in the east, showing differing phases as it passes through the English countryside, and forges its way through the present day traffic, towns and industries. I chose the rugged and beautiful views from the crags at Walltown, Steel Rigg, Cawfields, and the protected remains at Housesteads. The prospects of capturing the rugged angles as it cuts it way through the northern landscape, was very challenging. I wanted to show the natural ‘look’ of the wall in all its magnificence.

Looking at Hadrian’s Wall through a photographic lens, gave me a new perspective on why such a historical landmark should be cherished. To bring its crumbling grandeur to a wider public will hopefully help to protect it for generations to come. To achieve this through a photograph will help history to come to life for all people in the present and the future.
